Hyderabad: The cyber crime police, detective department, Hyderabad arrested two persons, one of them a national of Ivory Coast, for fraud and cheating a person to the tune of Rs. 1.22 crores.
The 34-year-old Bakayoko Lassina of Ivory Coast opened a fake Facebook account in the name of “Dr. Leonardo Matteo” of Scotland and sent friend requests to people. A Hyderabad resident accepted his friend request and the two started chatting on Facebook and WhatsApp. Later, Bakayoko Lassina told the person he was sending a parcel containing gold jewellery, diamonds, and other articles.
A woman, Shoma Purkayastha alias Shoma Prasad Purkayastha of Shillong, Meghalaya called the complainant impersonating a Customs officer. On the pretext of collecting Customs tax and other charges, she extracted money from the victim. After receiving the money, they stopped responding to the victim’s messages and calls.
The Hyderabad cyber crime police arrested the two and seized from them 20 passbooks, eight cheque books, 12 mobile phones, SIM cards, laptops, and other items.
The police have advised people not to accept requests on social media from strangers and not to fall into their trap.
