KPHB resident dies by suicide after losing Rs 1 lakh in Telegram work-from-home job scam

Hyderabad: A young woman in Hyderabad died by suicide after she was cheated of nearly Rs 1 lakh by cyber scammers who lured her with a fake work-from-home job on Telegram.

Victim trapped through Telegram advert

The deceased, Anusha, hailed from Kanchusthambham Palem in West Godavari district of Andhra Pradesh. She was married to Venkanna Babu five years ago, and the couple lived in Tulasi Nagar, KPHB Colony, along with their son.

Initial payment showed fake profits

Recently, Anusha came across a work-from-home advertisement on the Telegram app. Believing the offer to be genuine, she initially paid Rs 1,000 as requested by the fraudsters. Soon, her app dashboard showed a profit of Rs 7,000. However, this amount was never reflected in her bank account.

Sold gold to invest more

When she contacted the scammers, they told her that to withdraw the money, she needed to invest more. Trusting their words, Anusha sold her gold jewellery to arrange funds. She invested repeatedly, hoping to recover her money and earn profits, but ended up losing close to Rs 1 lakh.

After multiple attempts to contact them failed, Anusha realised she had been duped. Depressed and unable to handle the financial loss and mental trauma, she decided to end her life.

Victim left note warning against scams on Telegram

On Thursday, after putting her son to sleep, Anusha died by suicide by hanging from a ceiling fan. Before her death, she wrote a note warning people not to fall prey to scams on Telegram. She described the app as a hub of fraud and urged others to stay cautious.

Police have registered a case and launched an investigation into the cyber fraud that drove Anusha to suicide.
