Hyderabad: The KPHB police have arrested a notorious conman who posed as a neurosurgeon and the son of a Member of Parliament to cheat unsuspecting victims.
The accused, identified as Vayila Venkateshwarlu alias Dr Vikranth Reddy (29), hailing from Guntur district in Andhra Pradesh, has been involved in a series of cheating cases across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
Posing as VIP to gain trust
The case came to light after a complaint was lodged by the warden of Sitara Women’s PG Hostel opposite JNTU Bus Stop, KPHB.
The accused first visited the hostel under the pretext of helping his cousin secure accommodation. Over time, he made multiple visits, claiming to be assisting juniors or simply to taste the food. These frequent interactions led the hostel warden to develop trust in him.
Claiming to be the owner of a jewellery store in Jubilee Hills, the accused convinced the complainant to hand over her gold chain weighing four tolas for ‘remodelling.’
He later demanded additional gold, for which she paid Rs 55,000 online and Rs 45,000 in cash. However, after receiving the valuables and money, he became unreachable. His phone remained switched off, prompting the complainant to approach the police.
Criminal past spanning two States
Upon investigation, it was revealed that the accused is a habitual offender with a long trail of criminal activity. He has multiple cases registered against him under various sections of the IPC and BNS, involving theft, robbery, cheating, and even sexual assault.
A total of 14 criminal cases have been registered against him in different police stations, including KPHB, Kavali Rural, Santhapeta, Allur, Kakinada Port, Peddakakani, Kovur, Jubileehills and Gopalpuram.
His modus operandi remains consistent, gaining the trust of victims by assuming fake identities and portraying himself as a person of influence. The accused was apprehended on August 4 at the JNTUH traffic signal based on credible intelligence.
Caution to the public
Authorities urge the public, particularly hostel owners and women’s PG operators, to be cautious when dealing with individuals claiming high social or professional status.
Proper verification of identity and background is essential to avoid falling prey to such elaborate frauds. Further investigations are ongoing to identify more victims and unearth additional offences committed by the accused.
