Rajashekar Reddy said on Feb 20, police received information from Russh Hospital, Suchitra, Pet Bsheerabad, that a woman with severe burns have been admitted. Police visited the hospital and recorded the statement of the victim.
Identified as Thirunagar Navyasri, she was married to T. Narender for 15 years. The couple had two children, Tirunagiri Sri Chandana (14) and Sri Meghana (13). Navyasri told the police that she had been fasting on the eve of Shivarathri. She said when she lit the deepam with a matchstick, her saree caught fire causing her severe burns. After receiving first aid from a nearby hospital, Navyasri was shifted to Russh Hospital for further treatment. On March 5, she succumbed to her injuries at Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad.
Navyasri's elder daughter, Tirunagiri Sri Chandana, approached the Medchal police station and accused her father of intentionally pouring sanitizer on her mother and setting her on fire. Chandana stated that she had attempted to stop her father, but to no avail. Police have booked Narender under 302 (murder), 201 (causing disappearance of evidence of offence), and 506 (criminal intimidation) of the Indian Penal Code.
