Visakhapatnam: A 31-year-old-man who was convicted of murder in Maharashtra in 2017 was again sentenced to life for another murder and dacoity in Vizag city recently. He died by suicide in Vizag Central prison on Thursday. The incident came to light on Saturday.
The deceased was identified as M. Srinivas of Samalkota in Kakinada district. He was a notorious criminal and was involved in many offenses in Andhra Pradesh and Maharashtra.
Arilova inspector of police T. Emmanuel Raju said Srinivas was accused in murder and dacoity cases in Maharashtra and Vizag city, Andhra Pradesh. He was convicted for life in a 2017 murder case and was serving the life term in Pune's Yerwada jail, he added.
Srinivas was shifted to Vizag Central prison a few years ago to attend the trial in a murder and dacoity case under Three-Town police station limits in Vizag city. A Vizag court gave him a life sentence on Wednesday, Mr. Raju added.
The authorities of the Vizag Central prison said Srinivas slipped into depression since no one from his family and none of his friends visited him after he was brought to Vizag prison.
The superintendent of Vizag Central prison, S. Rahul, said they counselled Srinivas several times, but he lost all hope and ended his life. Srinivas's family initially refused to take his body but at the request of the prison staff, they accepted the body and created Srinivas in their hometown, he added.
The Arilova police have registered a case under section 174 of the CrPC and an investigation is underway.
