Hyderabad: Nacharam police solved the murder of a 65-year-old woman, whose body has been recovered from the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh.

The police on Tuesday arrested the victim’s tenant and his accomplices for allegedly committing the crime for her gold ornaments.

Body found after inter-state operation

Following the arrest of the prime accused, Nacharam police conducted an inter-state search for Dr BR Ambedkar Konaseema district.

Acting on the accused’s confession, police searched the Vainateya Godavari stretch and recovered the victim’s body between Appanapalli and K Enugupalli villages near Mamidikuduru on Tuesday morning.

The operation was carried out under the supervision of Nacharam Circle Inspector Dhanunjay.

Victim lived alone in Mallapur after husband and sons passed away

The victim, Sureddy Sujatha (65), was residing at Babanagar in Mallapur under Nacharam police station limits in Hyderabad. With her husband and sons having passed away, she was living alone and had rented out a portion of her house.

Tenant planned murder for gold

The main accused, M Anjibabu (33), a cab driver from Kothapalli village in Peravali mandal of Konaseema district, had come to Hyderabad for work and moved into Sujatha’s house as a tenant about two months ago.

According to police, on the night of December 19, Anjibabu murdered Sujatha and stole 11 tolas of gold ornaments she was wearing. He locked the house after the murder and fled.

Friends helped dispose off body

Police said Anjibabu later informed his friends, Yuvaraj (18) from Kandavalli village and Durgarao (35) from Vemavaram village, about the crime.

On December 20, the three hired a car, returned to the house in Mallapur, transported the body to Krishnalanka in Konaseema district, and dumped it into the Godavari River.

Case uncovered after sister’s complaint

The crime came to light on December 24 when Sujatha’s sister, Suvarnalatha, who lives in Moinabad, visited the house and found it locked.

Unable to trace her sister and noticing that the tenant was missing, she lodged a complaint with the police. Based on suspicion, police traced Anjibabu, detained him for questioning, and he confessed to the murder.

Accused arrested, probe continues

All the accused have been arrested, and further investigation is underway to recover the stolen gold and complete the legal process, police said.
