Hyderabad: Cases registered under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in Cyberabad Police Commissionerate saw a marked increase in 2025, with enforcement agencies stepping up action against drug trafficking networks.
While the number of cases and arrests rose significantly, the total quantity and market value of seized narcotics declined compared to 2024, according to the Annual Crime Report 2025 unveiled by Cyberabad Police Commissioner Avinash Mohanty here on Tuesday.
More cases, more arrests
Disclosing the details before the media persons, Avinash Mohanty said that in 2025, authorities registered 575 NDPS cases, up from 421 cases in 2024.
The intensified enforcement also led to a rise in arrests, with 1,228 accused apprehended in 2025 against 954 accused the previous year. He attributed the increase to focused operations, improved intelligence gathering and sustained surveillance on drug supply chains.
Drop in overall seizure quantity and value
Despite the higher number of cases, the total quantity of drugs seized dropped from 2,714.79 kg in 2024 to 1,524.91 kg in 2025.
Similarly, the estimated market value of the seized contraband fell from Rs 24.20 crore in 2024 to Rs 16.85 crore in 2025, the CP said.
Ganja continues to dominate seizures
Ganja and its derivatives continued to form the largest share of seizures in both years.
2024: 2,698.76 kg valued at Rs 15.96 crore
2025: 1,508.79 kg valued at Rs 8.33 crore
Though quantities declined in 2025, ganja remained the most commonly seized narcotic.
Rise in cocaine, opium seizures
Some hard drugs showed an upward trend in 2025.
Cocaine: Seizures rose from 242 grams in 2024 to 660 grams in 2025, indicating growing penetration of high-value drugs.
Opium: Seizures increased sharply from 2.008 kg in 2024 to 11.286 kg in 2025, with the value rising from Rs 10.04 lakh to Rs 56.43 lakh.
Heroin and other drugs
Heroin seizures remained largely steady, with a marginal decline from 2.254 kg (Rs 4.50 crore) in 2024 to 2.136 kg (Rs 4.27 crore) in 2025. Seizures of Alprazolam and other minor drugs also declined during the year.
Changing trends in synthetic drugs
Elaborating further, Avinash Mohanty also said that synthetic drugs showed mixed patterns. While seizures of MDMA and Mephedrone declined in 2025, Amphetamine and Ephedrine were newly detected, pointing to evolving trafficking methods.
No seizures of Fentanyl or Gudumba were reported in 2025.
Large-scale drug disposal in 2025
As part of efforts to prevent recirculation, enforcement agencies carried out extensive destruction of seized narcotics during 2025.
- Drugs destroyed
In 353 cases, drugs worth approximately Rs 25.44 crore were disposed of. The destroyed contraband included:
Ganja: 2,712.82 kg
Cocaine: 476.9 grams
Heroin: 2,163 grams
Alprazolam: 1,497 grams
Opium: 3.962 kg
Synthetic drugs (MDMA, Mephedrone, etc.): 8.108 kg
LSD and OCB papers: 1,766 units and tablets
Focus on targeted enforcement
The Cyberabad CP said the figures underline a shift towards targeted action, higher arrests and swift disposal, even as traffickers adapt by dealing in smaller quantities and high-value narcotics.
