Phone Hacked: WhatsApp file costs Hyderabad trader Rs 2 lakhs

Hyderabad: A businessmanā€™s phone was hacked when he clicked on a file he received as a WhatsApp text and lost Rs 2 lakhs even when the victim did not share any OTP or bank details with anyone.

According to the complaint filed by the businessman here, he received a WhatsApp message containing an APK file named ā€˜PM KISAN 2ā€™, which he downloaded. Clicking on it resulted in his phone getting temporarily blocked.

Subsequently, he started receiving multiple OTPs from various apps and lost access to his WhatsApp account. The WhatsApp account displayed that the last session was active on a Samsung Galaxy S23 FE. Later, he gained access to his phone through an OTP. He then realised that Rs 2 lakhs were deducted from his KVB bank account via IMPS even though he did not share any OTP or bank details.

The victim immediately called the bankā€™s customer care, reported the incident and had his card blocked. He has filed a complaint seeking assistance.

Public advisory

Never respond to emails and embedded links in messages and calls asking you to update or verify KYC documents pending.

Never share user ID/password/debit card number/PIN/CVV/OTP etc. Immediately change your credentials. Genuine bank officials, financial institutions such as the RBI and others never ask customers to share confidential information. Never share these confidential details even with your own family members, and friends.
