The arrested persons have been identified as Patlavath Raj Kumar (19), S. Rohith Kumar (19), and Sharanayya Sagar (22). The other four are minors.
The gang had committed a series of motorcycle thefts in various areas in the limits of Rajendranagar police station in the past four months. The cops had kept a close watch on the gang and finally based on CCTV footages and credible information they apprehended the seven persons at Hyderguda on Friday.
The gang members were all childhood friends and lived together in Nandi Musalai Guda, Rajendranagar. They resorted to criminal activities to support their alcohol and ganja addiction, according to the police. In the past four months, the gang had committed 30 motorcycle thefts in the limits of Cyberabad and Hyderabad commissionerates.
They sold the stolen motorbikes at Degloor, Nanded, and Anegaon in Maharashtra and a few at Balanagar in Mahaboobnagar district and also in Hyderabad for Rs. 15,000-30,000. Further, the accused also confessed that in January this year they had attempted to rob an SBI ATM at Janapriya in Hyderguda. However, they had failed.
The police, in an advisory issued on Friday, asked people to park their vehicles in well-lit busy areas or in parking lots that have attendants. Use wheel lock for two-wheelers and change the locks every year, the advisory said. Always park vehicles with the windows up and the doors locked and do not give a lift to strangers, it further added.
The advisory also directed people to use securing devices like steering lock, clutch lock, and brake lock. Double-check all doors, including the boot, and install loud alarm systems in your car, it added.
