Hyderabad: A local court in Ranga Reddy district has sentenced 42-year-old software engineer Swagat Kumar Bhoi to 20 years of rigorous imprisonment for raping a woman on the false promise of marriage.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs 5,100 on him and awarded the victim Rs 2 lakh in compensation.

Long-term relationship turned nightmare

The victim had been in a relationship with Bhoi since 2009, according to her complaint lodged with Gachibowli police in November 2017. She alleged that Bhoi lured her with assurances of marriage over the years.

Accused planned marriage elsewhere

The victim discovered that Bhoi was planning to marry another woman in Odisha on November 28, 2017. Upon confrontation, he allegedly abused her verbally and threatened both her and her family with serious consequences.

Court delivers Justice

Following an extensive investigation and trial, the XIII Additional District and Sessions Judge at LB Nagar found Bhoi guilty and pronounced the sentence, marking a significant step toward justice for the victim after years of harassment and legal proceedings.
