Hyderabad: Bandlaguda Police have busted a property mortgage fraud in which real estate brokers posed as house owners and cheated victims of lakhs of rupees.
One accused has been arrested, while four others are absconding, in a case that surfaced after a woman was duped of Rs 3 lakh.
The case was registered following a complaint by Mohammed Nusrath Begum, a resident of Bandlaguda, who alleged that she had paid Rs 3 lakh after being misled into believing that the accused were the genuine owners of a house offered on mortgage.
Modus operandi
During investigation, police found that the accused, all working as real estate brokers, had devised a systematic plan to cheat unsuspecting people.
They would take houses on rent, falsely claim ownership, and execute fake mortgage agreements to collect large sums of money from victims.
Key accused arrested, others absconding
The main accused, Shaik Omer Amoodi (24), was apprehended on March 25 based on credible information.
During questioning, he confessed to his role in the fraud and revealed the involvement of four associates, Mohammed Bin Osman Masqati, Mohammed Basith, Ali Jabri, and Shakeer Hussain — who are currently absconding.
More victims suspected
Police suspect that several more victims may have been cheated using the same method. Efforts are underway to trace the money trail, identify additional victims and nab the absconding accused.
Public urged to verify documents
Police have advised the public to remain cautious while entering into property transactions and to thoroughly verify ownership documents before making any payments.
