Hyderabad: A retired lieutenant colonel from Hyderabad fell prey to cyber criminals who siphoned off over Rs 1.2 lakh from his credit card by sending a fraudulent APK file link.
Fake traffic fine message
According to police, on July 6, the 49-year-old ex-Army officer received a WhatsApp message claiming that his car had violated traffic rules and he needed to pay a fine of Rs 1,000. The message included an APK file link to download and make the payment.
Loss after installing file
Believing the message to be genuine, the officer installed the file on his phone. Soon after, he received SMS alerts stating that Rs 1,20,409 was debited in two transactions from his SBI credit card.
Complaint lodged with Cyber Crime Police
Realising he had been cheated, the victim immediately approached the Hyderabad Cyber Crime Police and complained. Officials have registered a case and launched an investigation to trace the fraudsters.
