Hyderabad: The Warasiguda police have arrested three persons for their alleged involvement in an attention diversion theft case. The police recovered a gold ring weighing about five grams that was stolen from a senior citizen earlier this month.
The arrests were made following an intensive CCTV analysis and intelligence inputs.
Case details
According to the police, the incident occurred on February 5 near Lalitha Nagar, opposite Jamia Osmania Railway Station.
The complainant, V Ravi (62), a retired GST superintendent, was allegedly cheated by two unidentified persons who approached him on the pretext of performing prayers.
Taking advantage of the situation, they deceitfully obtained his gold ring and fled the spot.
A case was registered at Warasiguda Police Station under Crime No. 20/2026, invoking Sections 318(4) and 303(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
Tracking using CCTV footage
Following the complaint, the police traced the movements of the suspects through continuous CCTV footage tracking and informants. The accused were later apprehended by the crime team.
The arrested persons were identified as Subhash Nath (23), Karan Nath (21) and Sohan Nath (23). All three are natives of Madhya Pradesh and were residing in makeshift huts near Jalpally Road, Pahadi Shareef, Hyderabad.
Police recovered the stolen gold ring weighing approximately five grams from their possession.
Modus Operandi
Police said the accused targeted elderly persons by posing as religious mendicants. They would seek water or offer to perform poojas and, under the guise of prayers, deceive victims into handing over gold ornaments.
In this case, one of the accused allegedly swallowed the ring immediately after taking it and escaped in an autorickshaw with the help of an accomplice.
Swift police action
The accused were nabbed under the leadership of Inspector A Purender Reddy, with the Warasiguda police team acting swiftly to solve the case. The operation was carried out under the supervision of senior officers of the Secunderabad Zone.
Police have advised citizens, especially senior citizens, to remain cautious of strangers offering religious or spiritual services and to immediately report suspicious activities.
