Hyderabad: Six medical students from the Rajiv Gandhi Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS) in Adilabad, Telangana were allegedly assaulted by unidentified persons who barged into the college campus late Wednesday night.

According to the police, the MBBS students sustained injuries in the attack. Video footage from the campus showed Abhishek, an MBBS final year who was among the injured, being dragged to the main gate on the bonnet of a white car while he attempted to catch the assailants fleeing in a car after the assault. The student fell and sustained injuries.

Students boycott duties

“On Wednesday night, unidentified persons from outside entered the premises of RIMS hostel in Adilabad and beat the house surgeon and other students of RIMS with sticks and cricket bats. One of them tried to kill the house surgeon by dragging him on their car but the car hit the gate. We do not know the reason for this assault. Given these events, we are boycotting all duties from Thursday morning and going on strike until we get justice,” said Dr Arun Kumar, president of RIMS JUDA (Junior Doctors’ Association) and state vice-president of JUDA, narrating the incident and its aftermath.

Subsequently, demanding action against the persons responsible for the assault, the medicos boycotted duties and staged a protest in the medical college premises on Thursday morning, shouting slogans ‘Director, down, down,’ and ‘We want justice.’

Management involvement alleged

The students also alleged that the assailants were known to RIMS director Dr Jaisingh Rathod and sought their suspension. They accused an assistant professor, Kranthi, one Waseem and a few others of being part of the assault. The students pointed out that the assailants entered the institution by breaching the security system easily.
