Hyderabad: The Railway Protection Force (RPF), Secunderabad Division, has stepped up its campaign against drug smuggling under Operation Narcos, resulting in the seizure of narcotic substances worth Rs 5.79 crore so far in 2025.
The intensified drive also led to the arrest of 107 individuals involved in the illegal transport of narcotics through railways.
Major rise in seizures and arrests
According to Alakunta Naveen Kumar, Divisional Security Commissioner, RPF Secunderabad, the division has registered 88 incidents of narcotics recovery this year.
“Compared to last year, we have recorded a 59 per cent increase in the value of narcotics seized and a 62.12 per cent increase in arrests,” he said.
In 2024, RPF officials had seized narcotics worth Rs 4.27 crore across 67 cases and arrested 82 persons. All the accused and seized substances have been handed over to the concerned law enforcement agencies for further legal action.
Targeting the drug network
Naveen Kumar emphasised that narcotics trafficking poses a grave threat to public health and national well-being. “Drug addiction destroys lives, undermines the health of youth, and weakens the nation’s economy. It affects both physical and mental health, often leading to long-term consequences,” he said.
Joint operations with law enforcement
The RPF has strengthened vigilance in trains and at major stations in close coordination with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and other enforcement agencies.
Regular inspections and intelligence-led checks have been intensified to identify and intercept drug peddlers using the railway network to transport banned substances.
Continued focus on passenger safety
The RPF reiterated its commitment to maintaining passenger safety and ensuring that the Indian Railways network is not exploited for illicit trafficking.
Officials stated that the anti-narcotics operations would continue with greater intensity in the coming months, with a focus on awareness, surveillance and inter-agency collaboration.
