Though no one was injured in the incident, the explosion led to tension in Saluru town. People near the police station ran away from the spot after the explosion. The intensity of the blast was not massive and it only caused slight damage to the storeroom of the police station.
Saluru police inspector D. Sudhakar said they had seized a huge cache of firecrackers around six months ago and produced them before the court. The seized firecrackers were stored on the first floor (storeroom) of the Saluru police station for safe custody. At around 7.30 a.m on Saturday, some of the seized firecrackers exploded. Fortunately, there was no damage to the police station and no one was injured, he added.
The explosion has trigged fear among the police personnel inside the station and the people nearby. The fire service personnel rushed to the spot and doused the fire to prevent further explosion.
The police and fire service personnel suspect that a possible electrical short-circuit in the storeroom was the reason for the explosion. A case has been registered and an investigation is on to ascertain the exact reasons for the explosion, the police added.
