Sextortion Fraud: Gowliguda man cheated of Rs 3.41 lakh in blackmail of private videos

Hyderabad: A resident of Gowliguda was cheated of over Rs 3 lakh after he was blackmailed by a woman in a sextortion fraud.

Case details

According to police records, on October 5, at about 1:30 pm, he received an unknown call from a woman identifying herself as Jyothi Gupta, who attempted to seduce him during the call.

Subsequently, he received a video call from a person identifying himself as Vikram Goswami, wearing a uniform, who threatened to circulate the victim’s video on social media and damage his reputation. Out of fear, the victim was coerced into making multiple payments on different occasions through Google Pay to one Manjeet Singh, on the assurance that the case would be closed and the amount refunded.

Later, the accused also hacked the victim’s bank accounts, causing additional losses. The accused further intimidated him by falsely claiming the woman had died and demanding more money to avoid legal trouble.

Due to fear, social stigma and helplessness, the victim had to pay multiple amounts and suffered a total financial loss of Rs 3,41,950.

Public advisory

- Do not accept video calls from unknown numbers, especially those involving indecent content. Fraudsters record such calls and use them for blackmail.

- Law enforcement agencies do not demand money over phone or video calls to ‘close cases’ or ‘stop videos from being circulated.’ Such claims are fake.

- Never transfer money under fear, threat or pressure, even if the caller claims to be a police officer, official or advocate.

- Do not share OTPs, bank details, screen access or click suspicious links, as this can lead to hacking of bank accounts.

- If you receive threatening or extortion calls, immediately disconnect and block the number. Do not engage further.

- Preserve all evidence such as call logs, screenshots, payment details and bank statements.

- Report cyber frauds immediately on the 1930 helpline or www.cybercrime.gov.in
