Srikakulam: Special POCSO court on Tuesday sentenced a 35-year-old man to five years in jail for sexually assaulting a six-year-old girl in the Srikakulam district. The convict has been identified as Behera Gopi. The prosecution said on July 13, 2021, he barged into the house of a minor and tried to sexually assault her. She was terrorized and raised an alarm. Her younger sister alerted her grandmother.
Later, the girl narrated the incident to her parents. The victim's mother complained to the Disha police station on July 14.
Police registered a case under section 354-A, 452, 323 of IPC, and Section 9 (M) r/w 10 of Pocso Act.
After hearing the case, special judge K Sridevi awarded him one-year simple imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500 for committing a crime under section 452 of IPC; five years rigorous imprisonment and a fine of Rs 500 under section 9(m) r/w10 of Pocso Act and one month prison under section 323 of IPC. All the convictions will run concurrently, the judge said.
