Spurious toddy deaths in Kukatpally: Toll rises to 9, 60 fell ill in total

Hyderabad: The death toll in the spurious toddy tragedy that rocked Hyderabad has risen to nine, with another victim succumbing while undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital in Secunderabad on Monday.
42-year-old woman dies
The deceased has been identified as P Gangamani (42), a resident of Hydernagar. She was among the 23 patients admitted after consuming adulterated toddy last week.
Nine dead, 60 affected
The consumption of contaminated toddy has so far claimed nine lives and left nearly 60 others ill in Kukatpally area. Victims had consumed toddy at different shops on July 6 and 7 and began experiencing symptoms like vomiting, diarrhoea, and low blood pressure from July 8 onwards.
Critical patients on ventilator support
Currently, 16 people are still undergoing treatment at Gandhi Hospital, of which four remain critical. They have been identified as Vadla Sugunamma (61), K Nirmala (47), B Latha (55) and Manjala Swapna (26).
Doctors have placed them on ventilator support, oxygen therapy and inotropic medication to stabilise their condition. Hospital authorities stated there have been no new admissions since July 12.
NIMS treatment updates
At Nizamās Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS), out of 36 affected patients, 23 are still receiving treatment, while 13 have been discharged. Seven more are likely to be discharged later on Monday, officials said.
Investigation into adulteration
The Prohibition and Excise Department, along with the police, continues its investigation into the adulteration. Officials suspect methanol, chloral hydrate or alprazolam might have been mixed into the toddy. Those arrested in connection with supply and distribution are being questioned.
Couple hospitalised after consuming toddy
Meanwhile, a couple from Nizamabad district was admitted to Gandhi Hospital after exhibiting abnormal behaviour post-toddy consumption at Ramreddy Nagar in Jeedimetla on Sunday. It is yet to be confirmed if their condition is linked to toddy adulteration. Police have launched a separate investigation into the case.
