Hyderabad: An 18-year-old woman was attacked with acid in Malkajgiri on Saturday. The woman was attacked while she was waiting for her commute to her college where she was pursuing her bachelor's. As per the police, the attacker is said to be a 19-year-old man who has been allegedly harassing her to marry him.
According to Bollaram police, the woman regularly commuted to college using two bus routes along with her friends. As per her routine, she and her companions alighted at the Golnaka T junction bus stop and were waiting for the next bus when the incident happened.
At approximately 12:30 pm, a 19-year-old individual, identified as Ranjoli Naveen Reddy, a first-year Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) student at a college in ECIL, came to meet her on his Activa. He aggressively confronted her, demanding repeatedly that she agree to marry him, threatening her in the process.
When she tried to contact her mother for help, Reddy forcefully seized her mobile phone and smashed it to the ground, intimidating her further by warning that he would not permit her to be with anyone if she declined his marriage demands.
The situation escalated when Reddy extracted an acid bottle from his vehicle and poured it on her face. Amidst the chaos that followed, the assailant fled the scene, leaving her in distress and her friends in shock.
The survivorās mother, along with her office colleagues, arrived at the spot and rushed her to a hospital in Alwal for immediate medical attention. She was later shifted to another hospital for specialised care due to the severity of the acidās impact on her right eye
In her statement to the police, she disclosed that Reddy had been pressuring her to accept his marriage proposal and had previously threatened to physically hurt her if she refused. This attack was perceived as a deliberate and premeditated attempt to cause harm to her.
The Bollaram police, upon receiving the formal complaint, registered a case against the alleged attacker under sections 307 and 354-D of the Indian Penal Code (IPC). A comprehensive investigation is presently underway to apprehend the suspect and ensure justice for the acid attack survivor.
