Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Police have deported a Sudanese national, who had been arrested in two drug cases and was illegally overstaying in India for more than a decade.
The Hyderabad Narcotics Enforcement Wing (H-NEW) said the move was aimed at preventing his continued involvement in activities harmful to national security.
Arrival as a student
The deported individual, Mohamed Yagoub Mohamed Ali, arrived in India in July 2012 on a student visa and joined a BCA course at PG College, Secunderabad, under Osmania University.
However, he discontinued his studies midway due to financial difficulties and later moved to ECIL, where he met with foreign nationals involved in drug use.
First arrest in 2018
Ali’s first brush with the law came in 2018, when Kushaiguda police arrested him for cultivating eight wet ganja plants at his residence. He was jailed in Chanchalguda prison for over a year before being released on bail.
Caught again in 2021
In 2020, Ali shifted to Paramount Colony, Tolichowki, along with a Tanzanian acquaintance.
A year later, Rajendranagar police raided his house and recovered seven grams of charas and heroin. He was again arrested, imprisoned for a year, and later released on bail.
Links with drug traffickers
Despite multiple arrests, Ali continued to remain active in the drug trade.
In October 2024, H-NEW apprehended him once more, along with another Sudanese national, Mohammed AbdulRhman Osman, who was caught in possession of MDMA. According to YVS Sudheendra, DCP Task Force/H-NEW, Ali maintained close links with drug peddlers in Hyderabad.
Visa and passport expired
Investigations revealed that Ali’s passport expired in 2016 and his visa in 2013, yet he continued to stay in India illegally for more than 12 years. With no valid travel documents, police said he turned to narcotics trafficking as a means of livelihood.
Deportation to Sudan
To curb his illegal activities, H-NEW initiated deportation proceedings through the Foreigners Regional Registration Office (FRRO), Hyderabad. The Sudan High Commission in New Delhi issued an emergency travel document, and an exit permit was obtained.
A police team led by Inspector GS Daniel escorted Ali to Mumbai, from where he was deported to Sudan via Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport.
