The DGP said the agencies have successfully neutralized a big terror threat
He made these remarks during a demonstration exercise by the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), which involved over 1,000 personnel at Hyderabadās Hussain Sagar.
Early detection, prevention, and de-radicalization
Dr Jitender said the terror module was intercepted at its āformation stageā and that its members, though inexperienced, were taken into custody before they could execute any plans. He reiterated the police department's commitment to de-radicalizing individuals lured into extremist ideologies.
āWe are offering counselling to those influenced by such ideas so they can return to the mainstream,ā he stated.
Maoist surrenders continue
The DGP reported that nearly 300 Maoists have surrendered to Telangana Police in recent years and encouraged more to follow. He also acknowledged ongoing central operations like Operation Kagar, which is being conducted jointly by Chhattisgarh Police and the Union Government to combat left-wing extremism.
Gulzar House fire incident under investigation
Commenting on the recent fire tragedy at Gulzar House, Dr Jitender said a committee has been set up to probe the incident. āThe government is treating the matter seriously. Most casualties were caused by suffocation. Based on the reportās findings, appropriate action will follow,ā he assured.
Implementation of new criminal laws sees early success
Since the introduction of new criminal laws on July 1, 2024, Telangana Police have registered 1,251 Zero FIRsāan innovative measure allowing crimes to be reported at any police station regardless of jurisdiction, ensuring faster initial response.
The DGP noted that this has enabled swifter medical attention in cases such as sexual assault before transferring cases to the appropriate jurisdictions.
Focus on modern policing reforms
Dr Jitender also highlighted progress in enforcing new legal provisions related to gender neutrality, community service as a penalty, countering fake news, and enforcing mandatory sentences and tiered fines for damage to public property.
To ensure clarity and uniform application, the Telangana Police have released 47 Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for officers across the state, the DGP said.
