Hyderabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a murder accused in Hyderabad after 12 years.
Hailing from Hyderabad, Sattar Khan (52), had allegedly murdered his wife in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) in 2013.
The fugitive was apprehended by the CBI at the Hyderabad International Airport when he was trying to escape to Doha.
Murder in the UAE and Escape to India
According to CBI officials, Sattar Khan, who worked as a driver in the UAE, allegedly murdered his wife in 2013. Soon after committing the crime, he fled to India and managed to remain untraceable for over a decade.
Following a formal request from UAE authorities, the CBI registered a local prosecution case in April 2022 to pursue the matter in India.
Elusive despite multiple lookout circulars
The agency initially issued a Look Out Circular (LOC) to track Khan, but he successfully evaded arrest. Later, during the investigation, the CBI discovered that the accused had obtained another passport under a different name, enabling him to stay under the radar. A fresh LOC was subsequently opened based on this revelation.
Tracked down through technical and human intelligence
The CBI said its teams relied on technical surveillance and human intelligence to trace the fugitive to Rangareddy district in Telangana. Officers had been camping in the area for several days in an effort to locate him.
As the search intensified, Khan sensed the tightening noose and attempted to flee to Doha through Hyderabad International Airport. However, CBI officials intercepted him before his departure and took him into custody.
Produced before Court, further probe underway
Following his arrest, Sattar Khan was produced before a Magistrate in Hyderabad and has been placed on transit remand for production before the jurisdictional court in New Delhi.
The CBI confirmed that further investigation into the case is in progress to uncover additional details surrounding the accused’s long abscondence and his activities during the period of evasion.
