Three top Maoist leaders surrender before Telangana DGP
Hyderabad: Three senior Maoist leaders surrendered before the state’s DGP Shivdhar Reddy, deciding to quit the insurgent group and rejoin mainstream society. The police said that it is a major breakthrough in Telangana’s fight against left-wing extremism.
Veteran leader Kunkati Venkataiah lays down arms
One of the persons who surrendered is Kunkati Venkataiah, alias Vikas. He is from Siddipet district and joined the People’s War Group (PWG) in 1990 after attending farmers’ meetings organised by the PWD.
Working under commander Balanna, he gradually rose through the ranks over 35 years, serving in several key positions within the Maoist hierarchy before responding to the government’s call to surrender.
Mogilicharla Venkataraju and Todem Ganga quit over ideological differences
Mogilicharla Venkataraju, alias Chandu, 45, from Tatikayala village, Dharmasagar mandal, Hanumakonda district, joined the Maoist movement at the age of 11, inspired by revolutionary songs.
He was inducted into the Narsampet dalam in 1993 and later served in multiple state committee roles. Citing ideological differences with Maoist leadership, he and his wife, Todem Ganga, decided to surrender.
Mass surrenders signal waning influence of Maoists
The DGP highlighted that these surrenders form part of a larger trend, with 403 Maoists laying down arms in recent times. Officials said such steps not only weaken insurgent networks but also promote peace and development in areas affected by left-wing extremism.
