Vikarabad: The district police have booked a negligence case against a resort after two women tourists from Bihar drowned when their boat capsized at Sarpanpally Lake on Saturday.

Boat overturns amid sudden rain and winds

The victims, Ritu Kumari (52) and Poonam Singh (53), were visiting Vikarabad along with their family. They went boating at Wilderness Lakefront Resort accompanied by their granddaughters, Inshika (3.5 years) and Ivanshi (1.5 years) and a boat operator. However, sudden rain and strong winds hit minutes after the boat entered the lake, causing it to overturn.

Children rescued by family members

Both children were rescued by family members who rushed to help after seeing the boat capsize. Ritu Kumari and Poonam Singh were pulled out and administered CPR immediately but were declared dead upon arrival at the hospital.

Relative injured during rescue attempt

A relative, Alok Kumar, who jumped into the lake to save them, sustained injuries and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Vikarabad.

Police register negligence case

Police said on Monday that they registered a case under Section 106(1) (causing death by negligence) of the Bharat Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) based on the family’s complaint. They have launched an investigation into the resort’s safety protocols.

Family alleges lack of safety measures

The victims’ family alleged that the resort failed to take adequate safety precautions, resulting in the tragedy. Local CPI-M leaders staged a protest demanding compensation for the victims’ families and strict action against those responsible.

MP visits site, alleges illegal operations

BJP MP Konda Vishweshwar Reddy visited the accident site on Sunday and alleged that the boat was operated illegally by the resort without necessary permissions from the Irrigation, Tourism, Revenue, and Police departments.

“There were no trained lifeguards. The resort built dangerous floating bedrooms on plastic pontoons and rented them out to couples. Authorities must immediately investigate and stop these illegal activities in Vikarabad,” Reddy posted on X.
