Vijayawada: A tense situation unfolded in the city on Saturday when a suspect allegedly attempted to open fire on police personnel during a cordon-and-search operation near the Pandit Nehru Bus Station.
The accused was swiftly overpowered and taken into custody, averting a potential tragedy.
Attempted firing at Balaji Hotel
The incident occurred at Balaji hotel near the Vijayawada bus station where police teams were conducting inspections as part of a special drive. Officers grew suspicious of a man at the premises and detained him for questioning.
During the interrogation, the suspect allegedly tried to fire at police personnel and members of the EAGLE Team. However, the weapon did not discharge as the trigger was not fully pressed, preventing a bullet from entering the chamber, police said.
Accused identified
The accused has been identified as Murali, a native of Warangal in Telangana. Police managed to apprehend him while he was attempting to flee the spot. Further investigation is underway to ascertain his background and motive.

Part of ‘Operation Vajra Prahar’
The cordon-and-search was conducted under “Operation Vajra Prahar,” a statewide special drive aimed at tightening security and identifying suspicious elements.
Police teams, along with the EAGLE Task Force, have been carrying out intensified checks and questioning suspects across the state.
Authorities said the prompt response of the personnel on the ground prevented the situation from escalating.
