Vijayawada: Student thrashed with stick, belt for not finishing homework; teacher booked

By Newsmeter Network Published on 31 Dec 2023 7:03 AM GMTVijayawada: A Class IX student ended with severe injuries after he was thrashed by his teacher for allegedly not writing his homework in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh. The teacher has been booked and further investigation is on.
The incident came to light on Saturday when the Patamata police were informed about the ordeal the victim, identified as B Sathwik, a Class IX student at a private school in Currency Nagar in Vijayawada city, was put through.
Sathwik was beaten indiscriminately with a stick and belt by his chemistry teacher Ruben on Friday evening allegedly after the boy did not complete his homework. The student sustained bruises all over his body.
The teacher Ruben is a BTech engineering graduate and he joined as a chemistry teacher of the school a few months ago.
After returning home from school, the student narrated the entire episode to his parents and showed the bruises on his body. The aggrieved parents reached the school on Saturday and staged a protest in front of the school, demanding stringent action against the teacher for corporal punishment.
As the management of the school did not take any action against the teacher, the parents of the boy approached the Patamata police seeking action against the teacher and management of the school. The police have registered a case and the investigation is on.
It may be recalled that the management of Kendriya Vidyalaya-1 has terminated the services of a contract teacher (counselor) L Bhagya Veni, on charges of corporal punishment in Vijayawada in January 2023. The teacher Veni had allegedly beaten up a Class VII student and pinched him so hard that nail marks were found on the boyās arms. The student fell sick and his parents approached the management of the school which led to the teacherās termination.
Though the number of incidents of corporal punishment has decreased in the state, few incidents were reported due to various reasons.
