Visakhapatnam: The city recorded a 14 percent decrease in crime this year compared to 2019.

City police chief Manish Kumar Sinha said cognizable and property offences have dropped by 21%, white-collar offences by 28%, crime against women by 24% and cybercrimes by 4%.

Annual data released by police reveal that a total of 3022 cases were reported in Vizag city in 2020, while the number was 3458 in 2019 and 3461 in 2018. However, the murders have increased to 27 in 2020 from 17 last year. Similarly, rape cases have increased to 123 in 2020 from 106.

Police said a total of 671 property offences were reported and property worth Rs 4.78 crore was stolen in the city in 2020. Last year, the number was 850 cases and the property lost was Rs 6.14 crore.

Except for robbery cases, all other incidents such as burglaries, snatchings, and other property offences have decreased this year primarily due to Covid-19 lockdown.

In the crime against women category, a total of 945 cases were reported in 2020, while the number was 1251 in 2019 and 1381 in 2018. Similarly, crime against children saw a 33 percent decrease this year. Against 150 cases reported this year, while the number was 230 in 2019 and 271 in 2018.

ACP (CCS) Sravan Kumar said that cyber crooks continued to dupe the people with innovative methods in 2020. A total of 353 cybercrimes were reported in 2020, while the number was 368 in 2019. Over 60 percent of the total cybercrimes were related to financial frauds, he added.

When it came to the crime against women and rapes committed under the false pretext of marriage saw an increase of 16 percent.

Police chief said that the law and order situation in Vizag city is under control. Efforts to collect advanced intelligence, prevention, quick response, augmentation of forces in strategic locations, the effective beat system, special drives, visible policing, and effective control by the hierarchy keeps the Vizag city free from all heinous crimes.
