The incident came to light on 7 December when the Vizag city police booked cases against the man for allegedly attempting to kill his wife by beating her and forcing her to drink water mixed with acid. The victim and her parents had approached the police a few days ago seeking action against the husband.
According to the complaint, Aparna, who is from Chintalapalem village under Kothavalasa mandal in Vizianagaram district, married J. Gangu Naidu of Bhimannadorapalem village under Anandapuram mandal on 26 August 2016. A year after the marriage, Aparna gave birth to a baby girl. Her husband and in-laws who wanted a boy harassed Aparna for giving birth to a girl. Later, the couple moved to the Saripalle area in Vizag city.
In April this year, Naidu forced his wife to drink the acid water. Aparna did not inform her parents about the incident because her husband had threatened to kill their child. She was shifted to King George Hospital in the city for treatment when her condition turned serious.
When her husband failed to take care of her and her child, Aparna revealed the truth and informed the city police chief on 4 December. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against Naidu under Section 307 of the IPC and arrested him on Monday.
