Vizianagaram: A Kabbadi match organized to welcome New Year ended in tragedy after an 18-year-old player died of a head injury at Vempadam village in Vizianagaram district on Saturday night.
Althi Ramana, a native of Erukonda village, suffered a head injury during a Kabaddi tournament held to celebrate New Year on Saturday night. He was rushed to KG Hospital where he succumbed on Sunday.
Police said that the villagers of Vempadam organized a local Kabbadi tournament as a part of the New Year celebrations. Four teams were participating in the tournament. During the second match, A Ramana from Erukonda lost control, fell flat on the ground, and suffered a head injury.
Though he was shifted to KG Hospital for treatment, he lost his final breath on Sunday morning.
Police said it was a case of accidental death during the match and there was no foul play. "We have registered a case under Section 174 of CrPC and the body was handed over to the relatives of the victim following the post-mortem process," police said.
