Vizianagaram: Three inter-state drug traffickers were killed in a car accident near Shikarganj junction under Dattirajeru mandal in Vizianagaram district on Friday. The police seized over 100 kgs of dry ganja from the vehicle.
The Vizianagaram police have identified two of the three victims. Ravi Yadav (26) and Rohig Yadav (28) were from Uttar Pradesh. The police suspect that the other victim may have belonged to Uttar Pradesh or Odisha. There were three persons in the car at the time of the accident and all were killed.
Gajapathinagaram inspector D. Ramesh said the car was coming towards Vizianagaram from Parvathipuram. "We suspect that the driver of the vehicle may have lost control of the vehicle due to over-speeding and low-visibility due to heavy rain on Friday night. The car hit the culvert at high-speed, overturned, and plunged into a roadside pit, resulting in the spot deaths of three people," he said.
The locals said the driver didn't know that the culvert was under construction and he hit the culvert at high speed.
The police said the vehicle is from Uttar Pradesh. They believe the inter-state smugglers may have procured the drugs from neighboring Odisha and were transporting it to Uttar Pradesh. A case has been registered and the bodies have been sent for post-mortem. "We will investigate the case from multiple angles to nab a few others, including the suppliers of the cannabis," said a police officer.
