A special POCSO Court in Vizianagaram on Tuesday sentenced a 34-year-old-rowdy sheeter to life imprisonment for raping two minor tribal girls in the Manyam district on January 1, 2022. The court also ordered him to pay Rs 5 lakh each to two survivors.
Police said Velagada Rambabu, a native of Chinamerangi, was involved in over 20 cases. He posed as a police constable and raped two girls on January 1, 2022. Police said the rape incident took place when the two girls, both Intermediate students, were returning to their hostel after visiting Ravada dam on New Year.
After committing the heinous crime, the rowdy sheeter threatened the girls with dire consequences. He threatened that he will upload the incident on social media platforms if they reveal it to anyone.
Based on the complaint, Kurupam police led by Sub-Inspector Siva Prasad registered a case and Inspector TV Tirupathi Rao investigated the case. The accused was arrested under section 376 of IPC and the relevant sections of the POCSO Act. A charge sheet was filed against the accused.
POCSO court Judge Shaik Sikinder Bhasha convicted Rambabu and sentenced him to life in jail. The judge also slapped a fine of Rs 24,500 on the convict. Superintendent of Police, Manyam, V Vidyasagar Naidu congratulated the police personnel and public prosecutor M Sankara Rao for securing the conviction.
