Anantapur: Police have arrested an elderly person who had changed his identity to evade arrest for 16 years. Anantapur DSP G Prasad Reddy said in 2016, Sheikh Mahbub Basha used to work as a watchman of a Wakf board land in the Anantapur One Town area.

One day he asked his second wife Sheikh Fathima, to guard the land till he returns. After his return, Basha noticed that some unidentified persons had stolen sand from the site.

In a rage of anger, Basha assaulted Fathima and fractured her left hand. Later, Fathima filed a case. "After attending a few court hearings, Basha went missing. He lived at different places in Andhra Pradesh before settling in the BHEL area of Hyderabad", police said.

Basha changed his identity and worked as a watchman at a temple in the BHEL area. Basha obtained a fake Aadhaar card in the name of Kothapalli Srinivasulu and has been hiding his identity all these years.

Police arrested him near the temple premises in Hyderabad on February 20.
