Shifting our focus to other major metro cities, we observe disparities in levels of public involvement, each revealing a distinctive electoral story.
Kolkata: The West Bengal Assembly elections in 2021, conducted over eight phases during the Covid-19 Delta wave, recorded 82.30 per cent voter turnout.
Bengaluru: In May 2023, Bengaluru, the Silicon Valley of India, experienced a historical high in the state’s voter turnout at 73.19 per cent. However, Bengaluru Urban reported a turnout of less than 55 per cent.
Chennai: The capital of Tamil Nadu, Chennai, saw a voting percentage of 59.06 per cent in the 2021 Assembly elections, falling below the state’s overall turnout of 73.63 per cent.
Mumbai: The 2019 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly election recorded a 48.63 per cent voter turnout in Mumbai, with 10 seats in contention.
Delhi: The national capital held Legislative Assembly elections in 2020, witnessing a turnout of 62.82 per cent. Despite a decline compared to the previous Assembly election, the figure was still higher than the 2019 Indian general elections in Delhi.
