New Delhi: A latest data from the Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation, Union Ministry of Culture, revealed that the number of public libraries in India has increased from 27,682 in 2019 to an impressive 46,768.



Andaman & Nicobar Islands have a total of 18 public libraries, while Andhra Pradesh boasts an impressive count of 978 libraries. Arunachal Pradesh possesses 118 libraries, with Assam and Bihar having 240 and 192 libraries respectively.

Chandigarh, as a union territory, takes pride in its 8 public libraries, and Chhattisgarh follows with 28 libraries. Despite its smaller population, Goa showcases a noteworthy effort with 136 libraries, while Gujarat demonstrates an outstanding commitment to education with a remarkable 3,464 libraries. Haryana possesses 27 libraries, and Himachal Pradesh boasts 945 libraries.

Jammu and Kashmir accounts for 140 libraries, while Jharkhand has 21 libraries. Karnataka leads with a significant count of 6,798 libraries, and Kerala with an impressive 8,415 libraries. Lakshadweep possesses 10 libraries, and Madhya Pradesh has 42 libraries.

Maharashtra places great emphasis on education, with an astounding 12,191 libraries. Manipur possesses 157 libraries, and Meghalaya has 8 libraries. Mizoram holds 506 libraries, while Nagaland accounts for 622 libraries. Odisha has 27 libraries, and Puducherry possesses 81 libraries. Punjab possesses 15 libraries, and Rajasthan boasts 323 libraries. Sikkim possesses 13 libraries, and Tamil Nadu with a whopping 4,622 libraries.

Telangana has 672 libraries, and Tripura accounts for 46 libraries. Uttar Pradesh possesses 573 libraries, and Uttarakhand has 47 libraries. Finally, West Bengal with an impressive count of 5,251 libraries.

The figures demonstrate a substantial increase from 27,682 libraries in 2019 to 46,746 libraries today, reflecting the nation's commitment to enhancing educational resources and promoting literacy.

Despite the difficulties caused by COVID-19, the government and policymakers understand the need to invest in libraries to reduce educational gaps and encourage reading and learning. More libraries have been established, giving people in India better access to educational materials and promoting intellectual development.
