Cyber frauds: Over 70% of victims in Andhra are tech-savvy, educated youth

Police said at least 30 to 40 percent of the victims in the virtual frauds were either graduate or postgraduate. Over 20 to 30 percent of victims were working professionals. Only 10 to 20 percent of victims were either Class-X qualified.

Cyber frauds: Over 70% of victims in Andhra are tech-savvy, educated youth

Vijayawada, June 22: Nearly 70 percent of the victims of cybercrimes in Andhra Pradesh were tech-savvy and educated. Those caught were driven to fraud mostly to satiate their greed for money.

Police said at least 30 to 40 percent of the victims in the virtual frauds were either graduate or postgraduate. Over 20 to 30 percent of victims were working professionals. Only 10 to 20 percent of victims were either Class-X qualified.

ADCP (CCS), D Sravan Kumar said that cybercrimes are mostly committed by youngsters and tech-savvy.

Ironically, the majority of the victims of cybercrimes are also educated and tech-savvy. It's greed for easy money that drives a youngster to commit cybercrime.

ignorance and greed are the major reasons for most educated people for falling prey to virtual frauds.

A senior police officer with the cyber-crimes wing said that educated and tech-savvy youngsters fall prey to job frauds, lottery frauds, and others. Middle-age educated people become victims of vishing and phishing ('One Time Password' frauds).

Cybercrooks had duped Vizagites to the tune of over Rs 9.3 crore in 2021 by various modes such as earning money from home and a few others. The number of cybercrimes in Vizag city decreased by 13.5 percent from 2021 to 2020. But the cybercriminals stole over 50 percent more money in 2021 compared to 2020.

With technology becoming a silver lining due to the Covid-19, cyber crooks have been coming up with innovative modes to dupe the netizens. Ironically the educated and tech-savvy people are falling prey.

"We have been organizing awareness drives, but the number of cybercrimes has been increasing," said a senior police officer.

KEY POINTS

In Andhra Pradesh, a total of 1,761 cybercrimes were reported in 2021.

As many as 2,136 cybercrimes were reported in AP in 2020.

Of the total 307 cybercrimes in Vizag city in 2021, 104 cybercrime cases related to part-time jobs, OLX, and loan frauds.

The detection rate of cybercrimes was very low in 2021.

The Vizag city police managed to arrest only 21 accused in 18 cases in 2021

The Vizag police recovered only Rs1.2 crore of stolen property in 2021.
