Hyderabad: The Telangana State has taken the top spot in the country for mobile device recovery using the Central Equipment Identity Register (CEIR) portal. The recovery rate for stolen or lost mobiles in Telangana stood at 39 per cent ahead of other states.

The CEIR portal, developed by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT), was designed to combat the growing issue of mobile theft and counterfeit devices. Its nationwide launch took place on May 17, 2023, following a successful pilot program initiated in Telangana State on April 19, 2023, a pioneering effort that preceded other states such as Karnataka, which started in September 2023.

In Telangana State, Mahesh M Bhagwat, IPS, Addl. DGP, CID, serves as the nodal officer and super user for the CEIR portal, which operates in all 780 police stations of the state. The ADGP, CID, oversees the progress of work under the CEIR portal, resulting in the recovery of 10,018 lost or stolen mobile devices in 189 days, with the last 1,000 devices recovered within just 14 days and returned to their rightful owners.

The performance of Telangana State is evident in the numbers, with 10,018 mobile devices recovered, translating to a recovery rate of 39 per cent. This achievement places Telangana at the forefront, with Karnataka following at 36 per cent and Andhra Pradesh at 30 per cent, securing the second and third positions, respectively.

From April 20, 2023, to October 26, 2023, the CEIR portal in Telangana State has blocked 86,395 mobile devices, received 25,598 traceability reports, and successfully unblocked and returned 10,018 devices to their rightful owners.

Cyberabad Commissionerate scores highest

Notably, the Cyberabad Commissionerate contributed significantly to this achievement, recovering 1,428 mobile devices, followed closely by the Hyderabad Commissionerate with 1,206 devices and the Rachakonda Commissionerate with 912 devices. Other commissionerates, including Warangal and Kamareddy, also made notable contributions to this success.

The Telangana Police, in collaboration with the DoT, has integrated the CEIR portal with the Telangana Police Citizen Portal. This move encourages citizens to utilise the service on the Telangana Police Citizen Portal for reporting lost or missing mobile devices, eliminating the need to visit Mee Seva or police stations.

The Director General of Police (DGP), Anjani Kumar, extended his congratulations to the team led by the nodal officer, additional director general (ADG) CID Mahesh M Bhagwat, IPS, for their efforts and consistent monitoring.

Dr Lavanya NJP, SP, Cyber Crime, CID, TS Hyderabad, along with DOT officials, including Y Sreenivasa Rao, DDG security, Yeshendra Kumar Bansod, director security, G Raghava Reddy, additional director, and Ch Suresh Babu, inspector of IT Cell, CID, have played roles in overseeing the implementation of the CEIR application in the state, contributing to this achievement.
