Sole survivor of CDS chopper crash Group Captain Varun Singh succumbs to injuries

Hyderabad: The sole survivor of the Conoor Mi-17V5 helicopter crash, Group Captain Varun Singh succumbed to his injuries on Wednesday.

"IAF is deeply saddened to inform the passing away of braveheart Group Captain Varun Singh, who succumbed this morning to the injuries sustained in the helicopter accident on 08 Dec 21. IAF offers sincere condolences and stands firmly with the bereaved family," said Indian Airforce in its statement.

Group Captain Varun Singh who suffered severe burns and was undergoing treatment at the Military Hospital Wellington was airlifted to Bengaluru from the Sulur Air Force Station near Coimbatore for advanced treatment on December 9.

India's first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Bipin Rawat, his wife, and 11 others were killed when an IAF helicopter crashed near Coonoor in the Nilgiris district of Tamil Nadu on December 8.

A veteran of counterinsurgency warfare, CDS Rawat served in the most difficult terrains, including northern and eastern commands. He was commissioned into the Indian Army in December 1978. He had earlier served as the Chief of the Army Staff from January 2017 to December 2019.
