Belum Caves in Andhra Pradesh is now a Geo Heritage site
Amaravati: The historic Belum Caves in Andhra Pradesh’s Nandyal district have received the prestigious status of a Geo Heritage Site from the Geological Survey of India (GSI).
The recognition is expected to significantly enhance tourism in the region and spotlight the caves’ cultural and geological importance.
Symbol of ancient heritage
Welcoming the GSI’s announcement, minister for Tourism, Culture, and Cinematography Kandula Durgesh called the Belum Caves a symbol of Andhra Pradesh’s ancient civilisation.
Located in Kolimigundla mandal, the caves date back to 450 BCE and spread across 23 acres, making them India’s longest underground cave system and the second longest in the world.
Geological marvel with global appeal
“The caves are a natural wonder, filled with underground passages and unique rock formations that fascinate every visitor,” the minister said. He added that the Geo Heritage tag will help the caves gain international visibility and provide opportunities for enhanced infrastructure and tourism development.
Thousands of visitors each year
Belum Caves already attract lakhs of tourists annually, drawn by their natural beauty and historical value. The minister assured that the government would launch promotional campaigns at the national and international levels to further boost footfall.

Minister Durgesh also highlighted the broader tourism potential of the Rayalaseema region, citing destinations such as Tirumala, Ahobilam, Mahanandi, Yaganti, Srisailam, Brahmamgari Matham, Gandikota, Siddavatam, Gandi and Horsley Hills. “These are both spiritual and scenic spots that deserve focused development,” he said.
