Love in the time of technology: How online platforms provide opportunities to connect

Hyderabad: The way people experience love has evolved with technology. While the psychology of attraction remains rooted in human instincts, dating apps, social media, and virtual communication have changed how relationships begin and grow.

This Valentine’s Day, let us understand both the science behind attraction and the impact of digital interactions that can help navigate modern love more effectively.

The Science of Attraction: What Draws People Together?

Attraction is influenced by biology, psychology, and social factors. Studies suggest that facial symmetry, voice pitch, and scent can all play a role in initial attraction. But beyond physical traits, shared interests and emotional connection often determine long-term compatibility.

Dr. Anahita Ramesh, a psychologist specializing in relationships, explains, “Attraction starts with a mix of subconscious and conscious factors. Physical appearance can spark interest, but emotional intelligence, humor, and communication build deeper bonds.”

Research also highlights the role of oxytocin, the “bonding hormone,” which strengthens feelings of closeness. “Oxytocin is released through touch, eye contact, and deep conversations. It helps in forming trust and attachment,” says Dr. Ramesh.

Technology and Modern Love: Changing the Way We Connect

Dating apps and social media have changed how people meet and maintain relationships. While online platforms provide more opportunities to connect, they also alter traditional dating patterns.

Dr. Vardhan Shah, a behavioral scientist, notes, “Technology has expanded the dating pool, but it also introduces challenges like choice overload and digital miscommunication.” The paradox of choice—having too many options—can commit harder, as people may constantly search for “someone better.”

At the same time, digital communication allows relationships to develop beyond physical proximity. Video calls, voice notes, and texting enable couples to stay connected despite distance. “Long-distance relationships today have more chances of survival because technology helps maintain intimacy,” adds Dr. Shah.

From Virtual Attraction to Real-Life Connection

Many online interactions start with curated profiles and text-based conversations. However, transitioning from digital to real-life relationships requires effort.

According to relationship counselor Ishika Verma, “It’s important to move beyond the virtual persona. Meeting in person or having deeper conversations helps reveal true compatibility.”

She also warns about digital illusions: “People tend to present idealized versions of themselves online. It’s crucial to recognize whether attraction is based on reality or just perception.”

Balancing Technology and Emotional Intimacy

While technology makes love more accessible, it should not replace emotional effort. Experts suggest setting boundaries on digital communication and prioritizing face-to-face interactions when possible.

Dr. Shah emphasizes, “Technology should support relationships, not control them. Genuine connection comes from being present, both online and offline.”

As Valentine’s Day reminds people to celebrate love, understanding the balance between attraction, technology, and real connection can help build stronger, more fulfilling relationships in the digital age.
