Hyderabad: With the rise of mobile money transfer apps like PhonePe, Google Pay and Paytm, scammers are constantly devising new ways to exploit unsuspecting users. A new fraud method, referred to as the ‘Jumped Scam’, has recently come to light.
Here’s how it works:
1. Unexpected deposit
The scam begins when a fraudster sends a small amount of money, such as Rs 5,000 or less, to your account. This is a genuine transaction and not a fake deposit, which makes it seem legitimate.
2. Triggering a withdrawal request
After transferring the money, the scammer initiates a withdrawal request on your account.
3. Deceiving you into entering your PIN
Upon noticing the unexpected deposit, most users naturally check their balance. When you enter your PIN to check, the withdrawal request is validated, allowing the scammer to take money from your account.
Why does this scam work?
The fraud relies on the user’s excitement or curiosity about the unexpected deposit. Entering the PIN without verifying the transaction provides scammers with the access they need.
How to protect yourself
1. Deliberately entering the wrong PIN
When you receive an unexpected deposit, do not immediately enter your correct PIN. Instead, first, enter an incorrect PIN deliberately. This will cancel any fraudulent withdrawal requests tied to your account.
2. Check with the app’s customer service
Contact the app’s customer service to verify the source of the deposit and report any suspicious activity.
3. Educate yourself and others
Awareness is key. Share this information with friends, family, and colleagues to help them avoid falling victim to this scam.
The importance of vigilance
As digital payment systems evolve, scammers are also upgrading their methods. Mobile money users must remain cautious and adopt preventive measures to avoid financial losses. Always double-check unexpected transactions and think twice before entering sensitive information.
