`Where stories come alive’: How Kathatitam’s village-themed library is sparking young imaginations

Hyderabad: A calm, serene escape transports us to another world. ‘Kathathitam’ is more than just a library- it’s an experience. Located in a placid setting, this library is a treat for book lovers and those seeking a peaceful retreat. We caught up with co-founder Shilpa, who shared her vision and future aspirations for this unique place.

The meaning behind the name

Kathatitam means “beyond stories”, Shilpa explains. “Our work transcends the boundaries of the beginning and the end of a book. The space resonates with the name because it blurs boundaries of how a library or reading should be. Our work encompasses thinking beyond what's written, analysing it, taking stances through discussion, brainstorming, and listening.”

Inspiration from roots

Kathatitam began 12 years ago as a parent's quest. “I wanted to read for my children and asked myself what content I want them to read and why,” Shilpa shares. “Everything we read must bring value, be relatable, spark learning, and create habitual or behavioural change. Four months ago, we decided to reach more children and families. We chose a village ambience to reconnect them with roots—calming minds in cities where kids drift from what grounds them.”

A day in the library

“The day at Kathathitam starts with a silent moment,” Shilpa says with a smile. “We bring in new books, change themes, and make the space that day’s treasure. Young readers arrive curious with questions. I read them a story, and evenings feature art, theatre, and music collaborations.”

Fostering Imagination and empathy

Beyond books, sessions build lasting impact. “We read aloud regardless of age, followed by theme-related activities focused on habit-building or behavioural change,” Shilpa notes.

“These foster empathy; our process is designed around imagination and empathy from the workshops.”

Diverse books for all

Genres emphasize folk tales, diversity, science, and emotions, avoiding political dominance.

“Reading is a personal journey,” Shilpa says. “We offer diverse literature, texts, illustrations, and authors. Most books are in English, with some in Hindi, Telugu, and Kannada, which is my mother tongue. We aim for all Indian languages, prioritizing value for readers.”

Access and options

Books suit ages 2 to 15. “We have a membership for borrowing, monthly or one-time passes for reading and space access,” Shilpa explains . So, depending on the children's or parents’ requirements, we have various options that meet their needs.”

For families, not just kids

Kathatitam already serves all. “We see parents and grandparents with separate memberships,” Shilpa shares excitedly. “All books are relevant for adults too, not just children.”

Global dreams ahead

Shilpa envisions expansion, “Kathathitam in different cities in India, countries globally, schools, colleges—any space open to learning and cultural integration, where the best of culture collaborates to transcend boundaries, just like the name.”

In a world where there are countless stories, Kathathitam reminds us that the real magic is found in the connections we make, the empathy we cultivate, tand he minds we inspire, and it also reminds us to stay rooted in our heritage. Kathathitam is a true gem with its distinctive approach to reading and community building. Its impact is sure to be felt for generations to come.
