Andhra govt gives go-ahead to fill up 3220 faculty positions in 18 universities

Vijayawada: Andhra Pradesh government is holding a comprehensive recruitment drive to fill up faculty positions across 18 state universities.

The government aims to fill up 3220 posts of Professors, Associate Professors, and Assistant Professors. This long-standing issue is being transformed into an opportunity to ensure a reasonable student-teacher ratio, maintain academic excellence, and foster research brilliance.

According to the CMO statement, this drive will boost the academic landscape with 418 Professor positions, 801 Associate Professor positions, and 2001 Assistant Professor positions, including 220 lecturer posts of RGUKT, being filled up across 18 universities.

Background:

In 2017, the government accorded permission to fill up 1104 posts in 1st phase and 281 in 2nd phase based on EC resolutions. From Dec 2017 – Jan 2018, Universities issued notifications inviting applications for the posts as per the reservation policy of the State i.e. applying the roster points under each group separately for Arts, Sciences, Engineering, and languages disciplines.

The notifications were challenged before the AP High Court on the ground that the roster should be followed based on department, but not group-wise, relying on a Judgment pronounced by a Division Bench of Allahabad High Court and upheld by the Supreme Court

They also cited the process of the rationalization and sanction of posts thereon; nonimplementation of 7.5% reservation for STs; clubbing backlog vacancies in the rationalization; and conduct of T=tests by APPSC etc.

APPSC conducted a screening test for the post of Assistant Professor. 24,074 applicants wrote the test and 3,436 candidates were qualified as per the APPSC website. Thereafter, the results were communicated by APPSC to the respective Universities.

In 2021, a single-judge bench passed an order setting aside all notifications issued by the Universities in 2017 and 2018. The court directed the universities to issue fresh notification. After several hearings, the division bench upheld a single-judge order in July 2023.

On September 1, 2023, the government issued a G.O. that gave details about department-wise and cadre-wise sanctioned positions, prompting universities to fill up vacancies. University-wise statistics reveal a sanctioned strength of 1048 positions, 2918 regular vacancy posts, and 278 backlog vacancy posts.
