CM Revanth urges Centre to sanction IIM for Hyderabad, seeks more Kendriya and Navodaya schools
New Delhi: Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy on Tuesday urged the Centre to establish an Indian Institute of Management (IIM) in Hyderabad.
He stated that the city has emerged as a national hub for technology, life sciences, aerospace, defence, logistics and advanced manufacturing, thereby being the right place for establishing an IIM.
During his Delhi visit, the Chief Minister also sought approval for new Kendriya Vidyalayas and Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas across Telangana, along with Central support for the State’s large-scale education reforms.
CM pitches for IIM Hyderabad inside UoH campus in 200 acres
The Chief Minister met Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan in his Parliament chamber and formally requested the sanction of an IIM for Telangana.
Pointing out that there are currently 21 IIMs across 19 States and one Union Territory, he said Telangana deserved one in view of Hyderabad’s economic profile and national connectivity.
CM Revanth informed the Minister that the State had identified 200 acres of land within the University of Hyderabad campus for the proposed IIM.
‘Telangana ready with transit campus to start class immediately’
He added that a transit campus is ready, enabling classes to begin immediately once approvals are granted. The State government, he said, was prepared to extend all necessary infrastructure and logistical support.
Highlighting Hyderabad’s strong air, rail and road connectivity, investor-friendly environment and its legacy of producing talent across diverse sectors, the Chief Minister stressed the strategic importance of locating an IIM in the city.
Demand for Central Schools
The Chief Minister also requested the sanction of nine new Kendriya Vidyalayas and 16 Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas in line with the increase in the number of districts in Telangana. He said expanding access to quality education was essential, given rapid urbanisation and the needs of students in rural and remote areas.
He proposed Kendriya Vidyalayas in districts including Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Jayashankar Bhupalpally, Kamareddy, Jogulamba Gadwal, Narayanpet, Nagarkurnool, Suryapet, Vikarabad and Nirmal, and Navodaya Vidyalayas in districts such as Hanumakonda, Jangaon, Mahabubabad, Medchal–Malkajgiri, Medak, Mulugu, Peddapalli, Rajanna Sircilla, Wanaparthy, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri, Adilabad and others.
The State, he assured, was ready to provide land and basic facilities for all these institutions.
CM seeks Nirmala Sitharaman’s support for Telangana’s education initiatives
Earlier, Chief Minister Revanth Reddy also met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and sought her support for Telangana’s education initiatives, particularly aimed at BC, SC, ST and minority students, who form a significant share of the State’s population.
He explained the Young India Integrated Residential Schools (YIIRS) programme, under which 105 integrated residential schools are being constructed, one in each Assembly constituency.
Each school will cater to 2,560 students from Classes 5 to 12, benefiting about 2.70 lakh students directly, while also serving as education hubs for nearby government schools.
Rs 30,000 crore education push
The Chief Minister said the 105 YIIRS, equipped with modern classrooms, laboratories and sports facilities, would be built for Rs 21,000 crore.
An additional Rs 9,000 crore would be spent on upgrading laboratories and infrastructure in junior colleges, degree colleges, technical institutions and other higher education facilities.
In total, the State plans to invest Rs 30,000 crore in education.
To mobilise resources, the government intends to set up a Special Purpose Corporation (SPC) and sought an exemption from FRBM limits for loans raised through it, arguing that education spending should be treated as an investment in human capital.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman appreciated the YIIRS model and the Chief Minister’s focus on education, and asked officials to submit detailed information on the proposed SPC.
During his visit, the Chief Minister was accompanied by Telangana’s Special Representative in Delhi AP Jitender Reddy, MPs Anil Kumar Yadav, Dr Mallu Ravi, Chamal Kiran Kumar Reddy, Mandadi Anil Kumar and Suresh Shetkar.
