Hyderabad: Pet abandonment is a heart-wrenching issue that affects not only the animals involved but also communities at large. When pets are left to fend for themselves, they face a grim fate filled with hunger, thirst, injuries, and diseases. Abandonment leaves them distressed, confused, and vulnerable. Moreover, the consequences of pet abandonment extend beyond the animals, burdening animal shelters, and leaving pet owners grappling with emotional turmoil. Natural disasters further exacerbate this issue, highlighting the urgent need for disaster preparedness that includes our furry friends.

The Fate of Abandoned Pets: A Tragic Reality

Abandoned pets, especially puppies and kittens, face an uncertain and stressful future. Struggling to survive on the streets, they endure thirst, hunger, and exposure to harsh weather conditions. Without proper care, they fall prey to sickness and often meet a tragic end. Unspayed or unneutered animals contribute to the growing stray population, perpetuating a cycle of suffering.

Jasleen Kaur, Veterinary Surgeon and Owner of Allvet Pet Clinic said "When pets raised in a safe and pleasant environment are unexpectedly left alone, they experience a variety of traumatic situations that induce anxiety, fear, aggression, and despair. These feelings have a direct impact on pet health. Pet parents donā€™t give much thought to their pets. Unfortunately, most people donā€™t consider the consequences before adopting or abandoning a pet."

Impact on Animal Shelters and Rescues

Animal shelters and rescue organizations play a crucial role in caring for abandoned pets. However, the influx of surrendered and abandoned animals poses a significant financial burden. Many of these organizations rely solely on donations, and the challenges were heightened during the COVID-19 pandemic. With limited resources, some shelters may resort to euthanasia when they reach capacity, highlighting the dire need for support.

Emotional Consequences for Pet Owners

The decision to abandon a pet can have profound emotional consequences for owners. It can lead to guilt, shame, and long-lasting distress. Children, in particular, suffer when their beloved pets are suddenly taken away from them. It's a heartbreaking experience that leaves pet owners grappling with feelings of failure and betrayal.

The Impact of Natural Disasters

Natural disasters compound the issue of pet abandonment, as animals are often left to face the chaos alone. During such calamities, animal casualties often surpass human casualties. Pets, like children, form strong attachments to their owners and are ill-equipped to fend for themselves in disaster situations. They experience anxiety, fear, and behavioral changes, much like humans suffering from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Archana Naidu, Co-founder of Society for Animal Aid stated "Humans have advanced in the world. Pets form attachments to their owners in the same way that children do, and they are far more reliant on their owners. Animals that have been cared for by their family will be as terrified as humans amid natural disasters. The pets do not know how to protect themselves and are not prepared or trained to look after themselves during a disaster, causing them a great deal of psychological anguish."

Recovery and the Role of Animal Rescue Teams

Recovering abandoned pets during and after disasters is a complex process. Initially, pets may resist rescuers out of fear. However, with patience and a loving approach, they can be saved. Timely veterinary care is essential to rule out injuries, and consistent affection helps them heal. Specialized animal rescue teams are vital in these situations, as they have the expertise, manpower, and equipment needed to locate and rescue pets stranded in precarious situations.

Seema Mohanchandran, Pet Owner and Rescuer said "Laila, (the stray dog) was unwell after its mother died in a car accident. After witnessing her motherā€™s death, the pup was initially uneasy around people, but she eventually became accustomed to those she saw regularly. We had to leave the dogs at a boarding facility for around 6 weeks when we relocated. The other pets were right, but she did not fit in at the boarding house. She did not allow other dogs to approach us since she suffered from separation anxiety after losing her mother at a very young age."

Disaster Preparedness and the Need for Inclusion

Disaster preparedness plans often overlook the needs of animals, despite the profound impact they have on people's lives. Allocating budgets and resources to include animals in relief operations is essential. Animal birth control schemes can help curb the stray population. Preparing for disasters with animals in mind is not only compassionate but also practical.

Adopt, Don't Shop: Making a Difference

Many individuals and celebrities have embraced the importance of adoption. By opening their hearts and homes to rescued animals, they provide these pets with the love and care they deserve. This practice not only saves lives but also encourages others to consider adoption over buying pets.

The consequences of pet abandonment are far-reaching, affecting not only the animals but also the community and pet owners. It is a pressing issue that requires awareness, compassion, and action. By supporting animal rescue efforts, advocating for disaster preparedness, and choosing adoption, we can make a difference in the lives of abandoned pets and ensure they receive the care and love they need.
