Hyderabad: University of Hyderabad (UoH) alumnus Nagaraju Maddirala, IAS (1993), has been appointed secretary to the Department of Financial Services (DFS), Ministry of Finance.

He completed his MA in Philosophy from the UoH during 1988-90 and was the president of the UoH Students’ Union during his stay at the University. In 2019, Nagaraju delivered a lecture on the economic reforms of the 1990s as part of the Alumni Speaker Series at UoH.

Nagaraju has been the additional secretary under the Government of India’s Ministry of Coal since November 2020. He had been a joint secretary to the ministry for nearly nine months before his latest appointment. During his tenure in the Coal Ministry, he led the opening up of the sector through private commercial mining by auctioning more than 115 coal mines transparently and was responsible for reforms that have led India to reach one billion tons in coal production this year.

Over the course of the service, he served at state, national and international levels in the areas of public order, revenue and development administration, tribal development, finance, international economic relations, industries and commerce, healthcare and State finances.

Nagaraju's service won multiple accolades

In the State Government of Tripura, he served as district magistrate, director of Tribal Welfare, secretary/principal secretary of Health, Women and Child Development, Finance and Industries and Commerce and other departments.

During his tenure, Tripura was recognised on several fronts for its achievements in governance: it won the ‘Most Improved Small State in E Governance’ by India Today, 2016; it won the second prize from the Central government for reducing infant mortality rate (IMR) from 26 to 21 in 2016; and was awarded the best state in North East for ‘Ease of Doing Business’ in 2016.

During 2004-08, he served in the Ministry of Finance, Department of Economic Affairs as director in Japan/North America and in the World Bank Divisions. Thereafter, he worked as an advisor to the executive director at the World Bank in Washington DC from 2008 to 2012.

He completed executive education at Harvard University on Trade Negotiations in 2005. He was a visiting fellow at the University of Pennsylvania, USA, for one year in 2012-13, Centre for Advanced Study of India, and a visiting research scholar at Stonehill College in 2018-19.
