By Anoushka Caroline Williams Published on 3 Nov 2023 3:00 AM GMTHyderabad: Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad emerged as the victor in the national finale of the intercollegiate Sweden-India Nobel Memorial Quiz 2023, held at Zakir Hussain Delhi College.
The winning team, composed of students Sayed Mohammad Hashmi, Hussain Ahmed, and Sayed Abdul Mannan, demonstrated their knowledge by answering a wide range of questions on Nobel prizes and Sweden.
HE Jan Thesleff, Sweden’s Ambassador to India, presented the prizes to the winning team. The quiz saw participation from students across colleges in the country, with more than six teams competing in the national quiz round, facilitated by quizmasters Kunal Savarkar and Seema Chari.
Jan Thesleff expressed his satisfaction with the enthusiastic response and interest in the Sweden-India Nobel Memorial Quiz. The quiz was conducted in five cities across India, including Mumbai, Pune, Chennai, and Bengaluru, with the grand finale taking place in New Delhi.
He noted, “The year 2023 is a special year for us as we mark 75 years of Sweden-India diplomatic relations. The quiz is a great platform to celebrate the strong friendship between Sweden and India.”
Winners travel to Sweden
The National Quiz Champions are set to receive a weeklong trip to Sweden, which includes visits to the headquarters of partnering companies, Swedish universities, and the Nobel Museum. All participants in the quiz received certificates, and many were awarded exciting audience prizes.
Launched in 2008, the Sweden India Nobel Memorial Quiz has become an annual event that tests students’ knowledge about the Nobel Prize, Nobel Laureates, their achievements, as well as Sweden, its culture, people, innovations, and inventions.
The quiz was organised by the Embassy of Sweden in collaboration with leading Swedish companies in India, the Consulate General of Sweden in Mumbai, and other partners, as part of the Sweden-India Nobel Memorial program.
Quiz open to college students
The quiz is open to all Indian students currently enrolled at a college or university in India, with teams of three members from the same institution. The winning team from each city qualifies for the grand finale held in New Delhi.
The Sweden-India Nobel Memorial Programme, instituted in memory of Alfred Nobel, celebrates the contributions of Swedish and Indian Nobel Laureates. The 2023 edition is themed ‘Swedish Innovation Made in India’ and includes various events, from seminars and panel discussions to student competitions and cultural events.
