Osmania University awards 1,261 PhDs at 84th convocation; ISRO chief gets honorary doctorate
Hyderabad: A record 1,261 PhD degrees were awarded at the 84th convocation ceremony of Osmania University on August 19, held at Tagore Auditorium in Hyderabad.
Dr V Narayanan, chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), was conferred with the university’s 50th honorary doctorate for his invaluable contributions to India’s space program.
Dr Narayan was the chief guest and delivered the convocation address at the University, where students from the academic years 2022-23 and 2023-24 received their degrees and gold medals.
The event was presided over by the Chancellor of the university and the Governor of Telangana, Jishnu Dev Varma. The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kumar Molugaram, noted the institution’s 108-year legacy of shaping individuals and contributing to the nation.
Key highlights of the event:
- The university presented the Governor’s Gold Medal for the best PhD thesis in the Department of English to a Scheduled Tribe scholar, an initiative to promote tribal scholarship.
- A record 1,261 PhD degrees were awarded to students from various academic sectors.
- 121 gold medals were given to meritorious students.
The university announced that due to limited seating, only PhD awardees and gold medal recipients were permitted inside the main Tagore Auditorium.
The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Kumar Molugaram, highlighted the culmination of years of hard work, countless study hours and sacrifices of parents and peers and asked the students to remember the values of integrity, empathy, resilience and commitment to serve society.
He also expressed his gratitude to the stakeholders and the entire team of the examination branch, including Prof. Shashikanth and Dr. Krishnam Raju, as well as the Deans, Heads of Departments, and all stakeholders who worked tirelessly to ensure the convocation’s seamless execution.
