Hyderabad: Osmania VC conducts surprise inspection at Science College; reviews faculty attendance, hostel and mess facilities

Hyderabad: To ensure academic discipline, Osmania University’s (OU) vice-chancellor, Prof Kumar Molugaram, conducted an unannounced inspection of the Physics and Chemistry departments at the University College of Science on Thursday.

The decisive move is aimed at ensuring strict academic discipline and institutional accountability. It is important that professors in the college are punctual and that there is smooth delivery of academic courses and programs.

Key focus areas of the inspection

The inspection was a highly focused effort on core administrative and academic functions:

Faculty accountability: Officials physically checked the attendance registers of professors to confirm their presence and reviewed whether lectures and practical classes were being conducted precisely as per the official timetable.

Direct student feedback: Demonstrating a commitment to a student-centric approach, the Vice-Chancellor engaged in candid conversations with students to gather firsthand feedback on the quality of teaching, regularity of classes and overall academic experience.

Assessment of student welfare: The leadership team also inquired about the students’ holistic well-being, discussing critical aspects of campus life such as hostel facilities, mess food and sanitation to proactively address any student challenges.

This unannounced visit is a top-down commitment to maintaining the highest standards of academic and operational excellence, aiming to reinforce a culture of responsibility and address shortcomings promptly.

A sustained drive for accountability

The Vice-Chancellor’s visit is part of a sustained pattern of surprise checks within Osmania University and the wider educational ecosystem in Hyderabad over the past three months. This initiative highlights the administration's commitment to enforcing strict academic discipline:

Previous OU inspections: Reports from early October 2025 indicated that Prof. Kumar Molugaram had conducted similar surprise inspections across various departments and colleges on campus. In those instances, he ordered immediate disciplinary action against faculty members found to be absent while students were present for classes, strongly emphasising punctuality and commitment.

Wider institutional scrutiny: The trend of unannounced checks is not limited to Osmania University. In late October, the state government ordered the Vigilance and Enforcement (V&E) Department to conduct widespread inspections across educational institutions, particularly professional colleges, over allegations of misuse of fee reimbursement funds and irregularities in faculty and infrastructure reports. This broader governmental scrutiny emphasises a systemic push for greater accountability in the state’s higher education sector.

Prof. Kumar Molugaram’s focus is on tangible improvements and upholding the esteemed academic legacy of Osmania University and the regular concerns raised regarding academic integrity and institutional functioning.

Prof Molugaram was accompanied by Prof G Naresh Reddy, Registrar and Prof S Jithender Kumar Naik, OSD to the Vice-Chancellor.
