Nirmal: Students of Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge Technologies (RGUKT) aka IIIT Basar called off their seven-day protest on Monday. This follows the visit of Telangana Education Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy to the campus on Monday night.
According to the students, Minister Sabitha Indra Reddy was expected to visit the IIIT Basar campus in Nirmal around 8:30 pm. However, due to the rains, there was a slight delay and she reached the campus around 9 pm. She visited all the classrooms, and academic blocks, and interacted with the SGC (Students Governing Council) representatives.
"She assured me that a permanent Vice-Chancellor will be appointed for the university within one month. Also, she said that all our 12 demands will be fulfilled in a short while. She also said that an official order regarding the same will be issued within two days," said an SGC member.
After the minister's assurance, the protest was called off and the students were asked to return to their hostels.
Students of IIIT Basar started protesting on June 14 against the poor quality of education and lack of facilities at the institution. The students had made 12 major demands. They include improving the faculty-student ratio, the quality of food and water; appropriate sports, ICT, library, washroom, and hostel facilities; appointing a permanent Vice-Chancellor, and good teaching staff among others.
